No matter what food your child is allergic to, there are numerous basic practices that can be employed to ensure that your kid's food allergies remain at bay. A moderate amount of caution and pre-planning should help protect your child and you from a severe, or even life-threatening allergic reaction. Please remember that these tips should be utilized with the full support of your doctor and only supplement the steps he has already outlined for preventative treatment for your child. The first tip is to explain your child's situation to their closest friends. This will not only give your child a buddy system to draw support from in awkward dietary situations, but will also go a long way towards helping other children understand that there is nothing "wrong" when your child cannot eat typical foods at school or on the road. Should your child be spending the night, or any great length of time, with a friend or family member they need to be informed fully. A list of foods and raw ingredients that your child should not be fed would be good to pass along. It may seem intimidating to the host or hostess, but the alternative of a possible allergic reaction is much more so. The third tip is to be sure that anyone you explain your child's allergy to fully understands the severity of the potential situation. There are still plenty of people who remain skeptical about food allergies and are unaware that they can be fatal. Be sure that anyone who will be giving your child food realizes this before you entrust them with your child's dietary needs. Many times food labels contain variations of names (i.e. sugar is also glucose, maltose, sucrose, etc.) or terms in their lists of ingredients. Do the background research and make sure none of the raw materials that can activate your child's allergies are hidden in the products you are purchasing. If your child is allergic to milk products, look up alternative names for milk on food labels. If you child is allergic to wheat do the same. Most foods contain a sentence that can also be key in helping your child. These usually say something like, "processed in a facility that also processes nuts." Be sure to check any products you are purchasing for these notes. With severe allergies, even a trace element can be dangerous. When eating out at an unfamiliar restaurant, ask what ingredients will be used in your child's meal. Most restaurants use at least partially processed foods, so the information will be readily available on the product's source box. If the establishment does not provide you with the needed information, avoid eating there. Your child will always have to sit through a lunch period at school, and whether or not you pack your child's lunch, the school dietician should always know about your child's special dietary needs. If there is not an official dietician, speak to the person in charge of the school cafeteria. If your child has a food allergy that requires immediate medication, it is a good idea to make sure you have an ample supply. You should always have a dosage, as should your child's school and any other place they will be spending time at without you nearby. Should your child require a shot during an allergy attack, it is important that both you and your child practice administering a shot. The more routine the practice is, the less likely it is that one or both of you will panic and waste valuable time in an emergency situation. All of the careful pre-planning in the world however, does little good if your child indulges in a snack offered without thought by a friend. The snack could be okay, but it might not be. Our last tip seeks to avoid this situation; the best way is to go through several common child's snack foods and determine which ones can be on a "safe list" and which ones belong on a "naughty list." Work with your child to help them memorize which snack foods they can have and which ones they cannot. Instill in them that if a random food pops up it is best to presume it belongs on the naughty list. If you plan ahead and make sure that all of your child's friends and family are aware of their food allergy then the battle against a severe allergic reaction is already half-won. The other half is to concentrate heavily on finding out which foods your child can have and which they cannot and making sure they are fully aware. The last thing any parent wants is a sick child, and these tips, in conjunction with advice from your doctor, can help your child stay healthy and free from food related allergic reactions. |
